About Surah An-Naml
Surah An-Naml (النمل) is the twenty-seventh chapter of the Holy Quran. Its name means “The Ant.” It is a Makki Surah consisting of 93 ayahs and extends across the nineteenth and twentieth Juz of the Quran.
Surah An-Naml focuses on important themes of Tawheed, prophethood, gratitude, divine signs, wisdom, and accountability. It encourages people to recognize the power and mercy of Allah through the signs found in revelation and creation.
A major section of the Surah discusses Prophet Musa (Moses), peace be upon him, including his encounter with the fire and his mission toward Pharaoh. These passages emphasize Allah’s power and the truth of divine revelation.
The Surah is especially well known for the story of Prophet Sulayman (Solomon), peace be upon him. Allah granted him wisdom, authority, and the ability to understand the communication of certain creatures.
The name of the Surah comes from the account of the ant that warned the other ants to enter their homes as Prophet Sulayman and his army approached. Prophet Sulayman smiled upon hearing it and thanked Allah for His blessings.
Surah An-Naml also contains the story of the Queen of Saba (Sheba). Prophet Sulayman invited her and her people toward the worship of Allah. The story highlights wisdom, thoughtful leadership, and recognition of the truth.
The Surah also refers to Prophet Salih and Prophet Lut, peace be upon them, and the reactions of their communities to divine guidance. These accounts remind readers about the consequences of persistent wrongdoing and rejection.
Another important theme is gratitude. Prophet Sulayman recognizes that his knowledge, power, and resources are tests and blessings from Allah, demonstrating the importance of remaining humble when receiving success.
Surah An-Naml repeatedly encourages people to observe the natural world, reflect on Allah's signs, and understand that only Allah deserves worship.
